What is ARISE Together in Christ?

The ARISE process begins with a period of formation for the ARISE parish team, a group of 8-10 parishioners who will lead the parish through a process of spiritual renewal. Next fall there will be an opportunity for parishioners to participate in small faith-sharing communities that meet in homes and other locations throughout the parish over the course of six weeks. Over the next three years we will have the opportunity to reflect on these basic Gospel themes:

Season 1       Fall 2010    Encountering Christ Today
Season 2      Lent 2011
Change Our Hearts
Season 3     Fall 2011
In the Footsteps of Christ
Season 4      Lent 2012
New Heart, New Spirit
Season 5       Fall 2012
We Are the Good News!

Sign up for the first season
of ARISE and learn about
the core belief that in Jesus Christ,
God has fully revealed himself to humanity.
Sign up on our parish
website, or after Mass
on September 11/12 or 18/19 weekend.

Small Community Leader Formation Workshop

This workshop prepares small community leaders to lead ARISE Season One, Encountering Christ Today. It provides a basic theological grounding in the core belief that in Jesus Christ, God has fully revealed himself to humanity. It also highlights the practical skills needed to facilitate and maximize small communities as vehicles for prayer and faith sharing with a movement toward action.

The workshop will include a time for questions and answers with

My Dear People,

One of the strongest calls we heard from you in the Synod process was to give priority to the deepening of our faith life. The Synod goal that addresses this issue is titled, "Lifelong Faith Development". This was also a goal of our Capital Campaign, "Church for Tomorrow" which funds most of the costs of the ARISE program.

Our Diocese benefited greatly from the RENEW program which was used years ago as a way to deepen the faith life of our people. ARISE is a new program developed through this same group and will build on much of what we learned with RENEW.

It is my great hope that ARISE will be a source of great spiritual renewal in our parishes. I strongly encourage you to participate in the small faith groups being developed in your parish.

Be assured of my prayer and support as you join this tremendous effort.

Structures to Assist ARISE

Many people have been involved in creating the foundation for this process to be effective in our Diocese. Sr. Barbara Thiella has been coordinating the entire effort and she called together people from throughout the Diocese to advise and assist her. The first group was a "Plan to Plan Group" who met for over a year to refine proposals and to ensure that the work of ARISE would help us implement our Synod Goals.

Every parish has designated leaders who were trained and who will carry out the process in their parishes.

At this point, she has called a group to be the ARISE Diocesan Team.  They will oversee, inspire and encourage the process as it develops in the parishes.

Resources for Parishes

ARISE provides a wealth of resources that will assist parishes all along the way. Each parish has its own access code so leaders can go to the site and be able to read, download or purchase anything needed to insure greater effectiveness in the parish.

Some simple ways
to engage parishioners
in ARISE:

1.We read the ARISE
prayer together after the Profession of Faith at
every Mass for about six
weeks prior to the start
of the season and
continuing throughout
the season.

2.Conducted a “mini”
sample ARISE session
after each mass before
the first sign-up Sunday,
to help parishioners
understand what an
ARISE session entailed.

3.The ARISE planning
committee wrote articles
in the church bulletin
about their ARISE
experience and insights.

4.We displayed a banner
for all passers-by to see
that advertised and invited
people to participate in
our ARISE process.

5. To the extent possible,
all Parish meetings were suspended during the six
weeks of Arise so everyone
could participate.

6. Before the second
Season of Arise we
asked three participants
to speak after Mass about
their experience of
Season One.

Testimonials listing Best Practices

ARISE is being used throughout the United States and the suggestions, hints and a list of good ideas are all available on the ARISE website which you can access by clicking here, entering your parish code. If you are not sure what that is, ask one of the ARISE leaders in your parish.

If you would like to read or copy a pdf version of the ARISE brochure, this link will provide a file to download .

Hear From others:

"At the end of each Arise season we had a potluck supper for all participants. The first season it was preceded by a Mass and the second Season by a Prayer Service. We had a wonderful response and it was a nice way to bring all participants together for a shared experience." ( St. Athanasius, Reading )

"The ARISE community came together to celebrate Season One with a Prayer Service. Over 100 parishioners showed up and the ARISE team sponsored a Ham& Bean Supper. The number of small community groups grew for Season Two. We celebrated Season Two with a Mass followed by a Potluck/ Social.

The small community groups have been active in helping others: donating items to the needy, volunteering for St. Vincent DePaul and praying. The parish held its first reteat. The ARISE process has been a wonderful gift for our parish community." ( St.Edith Stein Parish, Brockton )

One of our Arise groups was inspired to make a commitment to social action and bought a table at our annual parish Christmas Craft Fair held on the first weekend in December. Instead of selling their own hand-made products and keeping the proceeds, they decided to support Catholic Relief Services through the "A Greater Gift" trade fair sale option. It was very simple and required no expenditure up front. Their hope for the future is to convince the parish to buy and serve only fair trade coffee. They will present this proposal through our Parish Council Arise representative.
(Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Marblehead)

The Archdiocese of Boston was the first to engage in the ARISE process and their website gives good insight into how parishes grew and individuals were deepened in their life of faith. By clicking on the beginning of this paragraph, you can read and learn about the experience that parishioners and leaders had in Boston.
